1. Introduction to Module 1 – Advocacy & Support
Module 1 includes three units of competency:
NAT10861002 Advocate for clients in need of legal assistance
CHCCOM002 Use communication to build relationships
NAT10861007 Utilise ethical standards when dealing with clients
These units describe the knowledge and skills required to advocate for clients in need of legal assistance by applying specific workplace communication techniques to build and maintain relationships based on respect and trust.
The communication skills will be applied to target communication issues that may arise in the context of your advocacy work. These skills may be applied across a range of workplace contexts involving application of a range of communication strategies to address specific needs and issues, working with various levels of social and cultural diversity.
Specifically, we will be applying these skills in the context of dealing with Indigenous clients who need legal assistance.

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to apply accepted codes of ethics and professional standards to daily work requirements. Ethical codes and practices are an integral part of work and life. An understanding of the basic principles and standards to abide by are necessary to maintain an effective relationship with clients and/or colleagues.
